How Coupa Is Helping Bring Veterans Into Tech Jobs

Many discharged US veterans have invaluable and hands-on technical skills and education, but they may not be equipped to deal with the business world of creating targeted resumes, applying for corporate engineering roles, and interviewing. Many times the experience they have received during their military careers doesn’t map easily to corporate requirements, eliminating them as candidates for many positions they are actually qualified to fill.

Our FedRamp certified solutions are targeted for government agencies requiring U.S Persons staffing, that may include some level of security clearance as well as other requirements for which veterans have already been vetted. Critical thinking, accountability and leadership soft-skills of veterans are often high (which are difficult skills to train) while the specific technical stack requirements like Ruby on Rails or AWS or tool experience like Github or Jira can be trained on the job. Coupa’s Veteran Onboarding Program is designed to leverage this pool of resources bringing exceptional veteran candidates into a program that increases their skills and provides them with a career path in Cloud Operations.

Coupa Engineering, Cloud and IT leaders are working with Coupa University’s Enablement leaders to design this program to bridge that gap and match discharged veterans to job postings for U.S. based technical jobs in IT, Technical Support, Site Reliability Engineers and Security Leads. This Veteran Onboarding team will work with government agencies like the Department of Defense and Wounded Warrior Project to find eligible veterans. While creating an in-house onboarding plan as well as internal support with other veteran colleagues (over 50 of them) to give these veterans a career path with built-in check-ins to learn about the different career paths and choose the onboarding path that is right for them.

Our Talent Acquisition team launched a Veterans Career page with a new Military Occupational Classification (MOC) search feature. With over 60 different MOCs between the different military branches, this tool is meant to help match skill sets gained in the Military to current job openings at Coupa and bring in qualified veterans to the Coupa Village.

The purpose of MOCs are to identify skills, experience, credentials and education obtained in the military and align them with civilian opportunities. We invite you to share our career opportunities with Veterans you know. Visit us at https://careers.coupa.com/global/en/veterans.

Utilizing Coupa University and external technical training tools like Udemy Business Pro and LinkedIn Learning and other certification sites, the training will be designed to educate them with the knowledge they need not only during onboarding but throughout their entire career at Coupa where we continuously Strive For Excellence as one of our three main values.

Before working at Coupa, I was extremely dissatisfied with my job for nearly a decade. I felt trapped, imprisoned, frustrated to the point of not knowing whether to burst out bawling or laughing (and did both over the years), and nearly desperate. Why did it take me so long to leave and find Coupa? Before Covid and the social norm of using Zoom or Google Meets, I knew there were no other companies nearby my small, Wisconsin town that could provide a similar income without an hour commute, and as the breadwinner of my family with my husband an elementary school teacher along with our two high school girls, I could not justify trading my happiness to diminish theirs. Being a midwesterner as well as a GenXer, I talked myself into “sucking it up” and grinding for the next 20 years until I could retire for them to have stability. Covid, Zoom and then Coupa changed my life. With the global pandemic changing the way business worked, it was like my eyes were opened up to the entire world of possibilities. I made it my second job to read job descriptions and attend virtual interviews, refusing to settle for a company I wasn’t obsessed with. My obsession with Coupa started before even my first conversation with Talent Acquisition, from the very beginning when I read the job description that included Coupa’s Core Values. Not only did I fully embody and believe in all three values from the start, but I was obsessed with a company that would even have values like this! I had no idea how important and embedded these values really were to this company at the time, but it was the first reason I wanted to work here.
